The Italian Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, Inc, spearheaded the 2nd edition of the Calabarzon Business Conference last June 8, 2023 from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the Glass Pavilion of the Dusit Thani Manila. This event was organized by GlobalLink-MP and Olacon and was held together with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other Chambers of Commerce from Europe, namely the French Chamber of Commerce, the German Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, La Cámara - Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, Dutch Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, the British Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, NordCham Philippines and Aadvantage Austria.
As one of the country's fastest-growing economic hubs and thriving center for business and investment opportunities, the 2023 Calabarzon Business Conference was a highly anticipated event. The conference brought together over 150 industry leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and investors to discuss and explore the region's potential for economic growth and development and provided a platform for networking, collaboration, and knowledge sharing among participants from various sectors.
The conference program featured a diverse range of topics, including infrastructure development, innovation and technology, sustainability, agribusiness, manufacturing, tourism, and human capital development. The keynote speaker for this event was the President of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), George Barcelon.
Arch. Jun Palafox of Palafox Associate Architects discussed the extraordinary population and housing growth in the region of Calabarzon. Palafox's insights highlighted the pressing need for sustainable urban planning and development strategies to accommodate the region's expanding population while preserving its natural resources and promoting a high quality of life.
Tapping on renewable sources for LGU's in Calabarzon was the Co-founder and President of Sunsmart Philippines, Jenny Maano. Maano's presentation and expertise offered innovative solutions and practical approaches to integrating renewable energy systems, such as solar and wind power, into the infrastructure and operations of LGUs. Jenny's dedication to promoting sustainable energy practices and her collaboration with professionals demonstrated a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and creating a greener future.
The role of trademarks, collective marks and geographical indications in branding were also highlighted in the event by Atty. Joan Estremadura of the Bureau of Trademarks, Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL).
Discussing the role and importance of enhancing Micro - Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSME) competitiveness in the Calabarzon Region was the Vice-President for Industry and Director for Digital Innovation and Science Technology, Ferdinand A. Ferrer. Ferrer's topic shed light on the importance of providing support and resources to enable these businesses to thrive in a rapidly evolving economic landscape. His talk highlighted the potential for digital innovation and science and technology advancements to empower MSMEs, allowing them to leverage new tools, technologies, and platforms to enhance their competitiveness. By encouraging collaboration, fostering innovation, and providing access to training and mentorship programs, the Calabarzon Region can create an enabling environment that empowers MSMEs to grow, create jobs, and contribute to the overall economic development of the region. Mr. Ferrer's insights served as a call to action for stakeholders to prioritize the enhancement of MSMEs' competitiveness, recognizing their crucial role as drivers of economic growth and job creation in Calabarzon.
Chief Revenue Officer of SEIPI (Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines, Inc.), Noel C. Ramirez delved into the immense potential of the electronics industry in Calabarzon. With a focus on nurturing innovation, encouraging investment, and fostering regional growth, the speaker highlighted the pivotal role that Calabarzon can play in driving the electronics sector forward. The talk emphasized on the region's strategic location, skilled workforce, and supportive business environment, which collectively create a conducive ecosystem for the growth and development of the electronics industry.
Esteemed speaker Deputy Director General of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), DDG. Vivian S. Santos discussed the perks and advantages of setting up a business in a Peza Zone. DDG. Santos highlighted the various incentives and benefits that enterprises can enjoy when operating within a PEZA Zone. These advantages include tax incentives, streamlined processes, access to world-class infrastructure, and a business-friendly environment conducive to growth and success. DDG. Santos' presentation served as a valuable resource for entrepreneurs and investors, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the unique opportunities that PEZA Zones offer in terms of fostering business expansion, attracting foreign investments, and creating employment opportunities. The event was hosted by the Executive Director, Lorens Ziller together with the Head of Marketing and Events at the Italian Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines.
Another speaker for the 2nd Calabarzon Business Conference was the Head of the Trade Section of the EU Delegation to the Philippines, Philipp Dupuis. Dupuis spoke on the European relations and trade opportunities between the European Union (EU) and the Calabarzon region. With his deep knowledge of international trade and extensive experience in fostering bilateral relations, Mr. Dupuis shed light on the potential for enhanced economic cooperation and collaboration between the EU and Calabarzon. His talk emphasized the importance of building strong trade partnerships, exploring investment opportunities, and leveraging the EU's expertise and resources to support the region's economic growth. By highlighting the benefits of EU-Calabarzon trade relations, Mr. Dupuis encouraged participants to seize the potential for increased market access, technology transfer, and knowledge sharing. His insights provided valuable guidance on navigating the European market and establishing mutually beneficial business connections.
Leslie Cham, Executive Vice-President of Security Bank delivered a presentation of the financial empowerment of small and medium-sized enterprises SME's in a growing economy. Cham emphasized the importance of financial empowerment for SMEsin the context of a rapidly growing economy. With their potential to drive innovation, create employment opportunities, and contribute to overall economic development, SMEs play a crucial role in fueling growth. Cham highlighted the need for tailored financial solutions and support services specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of SMEs, enabling them to thrive and flourish in the dynamic business landscape. The audience was inspired by Cham's insights and recognized the significance of fostering a supportive environment that empowers SMEs to unlock their full potential.
A notable speaker of the conference was the Category Director for Fashion Cluster of Lazada, Sheryll Nito who spoke on the opportunities and challenges of starting and expanding businesses in Calabarzon through online selling. With the rapid growth of e-commerce, Nito highlighted the importance of leveraging digital platforms to reach a wider customer base and maximize business potential in the region.
Topics on real estate developments and opportunities in South Luzon were touched by Arch. Romolo Nati, Chairman and CEO of ItalPinas Development Corporation. Nati shed light on the emerging trends and investment prospects in the region, emphasizing the need for sustainable and innovative approaches to urban planning and infrastructure development.
Another esteemed speaker and Awardee of the ICCPI Leadership Awards 2022 was the Founder and Chairman of Carmen's Best Paco Magsaysay. Magsaysay delved into the topic of dairy farming and industrial production, specifically focusing on the Calabarzon region. With his expertise and passion for the industry, he shed light on the intricacies of dairy farming and shared insights into the challenges and opportunities present in this sector.
The Calabarzon Business Conference also provided a platform for local businesses and startups to showcase their products, services, and innovative solutions. Founder and CEO of Ginga and Mayor of Lobo Batangas, Hon. Lota Lazarte Manalo graced the event to discuss expanding horizons, agricultural farming and exporting local products from Lobo to Europe.
A panel discussion also took place focusing on industrial development and manufacturing, tourism and agriculture development "agritourism". The set of esteemed panel speakers included the President of PCCI Laguna, Atty. Rosa Zara- Coloma, President of PCCI Antipolo- Oliver Dawin, and President of PCCI Batangas- Engr. Raul D. Mercado.
The Vice-President of Regional Affairs at PCCI, Engr. Eunina Mangio delivered an inspirational speech focused on fostering business growth within the Calabarzon region. With a wealth of knowledge and experience, Mangio motivated the audience to strive for excellence and explore new horizons in their entrepreneurial pursuits. Her words ignited a fire within the attendees, urging them to unleash their potential and actively contribute to the advancement of Calabarzon's business landscape. Mangio's impactful speech underscored the significance of determination and perseverance as driving forces behind the success of any enterprise. Following Engr. Mangio's motivational address, Sallie Lacson, the Area Vice-President of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, delivered the closing remarks. Lacson expressed her appreciation for the attendees' participation and emphasized the importance of collaboration and unity within the business community. She highlighted the achievements and initiatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and encouraged the audience to continue supporting and engaging in its endeavors.
